Dear Friends of Children,

We totally oppose to the fact that the children are deprived of their rights of play and chances of improving themselves but instead they take the heavy responsibility of working and making their own living. We are aware that they should be in educational institutions until 18 years of age. We try hard to achieve this goal, but until this is obtained, its our duty to stand by working children and give them our full support.

Since 2002, we try to create the public awareness on this subject by organising a photography contest on child labour. We believe that the archives created by this contest will be a sound source for our struggle of protection of working children. One of the most imortant aims of this contest is to document and leave a trace in history about “child labour” with the hope of eliminating it all together. We believe we have definitely achieved success on the national level, and the award wining photographs which can be reached through our web-page: “fisek.org”, are a sound proof of this fact.

This year, we have planned to open the doors of this contest to international public, as well as national boundries. With your support, we hope to give an international rendes-vous among the expert photographers to attract attention throughout the world.

We would appreciate if you can distribute the attached application form and participation conditions to the photographers who are sensitive to “child labour”. With the hope that, in future, we will live in a world, where everything will be better than today. We wish you a pleasant working day and world.

About the FISEK INSTITUTE

Science & Action Foundation for CHILD LABOUR

Foundation is an organization that appropriates willingness and nongovernmental community that make the basis of being a nongovernmental organization.

Our foundation initiated many beginnings and originalities considering the studies concerning social risk groups. The model that our foundation created for health and social service provision concerning child labour continues to improve since 23 years. Fisek Model also includes the studies at the apprenticeship training centres besides the mobile clinic, occupational safety exhibition house and health centres at the industrial zone containing small-scale workplaces.

This model study took its place at the “best practices exhibition” at the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat-II, 1996), was presented in many international congresses and was model of many studies also in our country. This study also got the award of Turkish Republic, President of the Republic Merit Certificate, 1997

Here are four of the steps that the model reached today.

1. Group occupational health-safety unit : It includes the small-scale workplaces and is the first and longest-term intervention in its area in Turkiye. Approach of teamwork and community medicine is applied at the occupational health and safety. This is the only and survivable way to access the children at their work environment.

2. School health unit at the apprenticeship training centres: At the apprentice schools that the working children attend a day per week they have health examination and training; and their social environment is investigated.

3. We found a way to make working children recall their childhood at least for a short while as a summer vacation at the seaside. With our campaign that we name as “holiday joy of the apprentices” 10 girls and 10 boys find the opportunity to taste and share the favours as sand, sea, sun, and spare time activities and the standards as wage-leave every year.

4. Educational and social support programs concerning the working girls are carried on. They are supported to become educated and qualified individuals to exist as an independent individual, to recognize the women identity, gain self-confidence and exist continuously at the work life.

Photography and painting exhibitions are continuing relentlessly since seven years within the scope of Prof.Dr.Nusret H.Fisek Science and Art Gallery. There are realized also conferences and idea workshops.

Another first and original intervention that is realized at the Prof.Dr.Nusret H.Fisek Science and Art Gallery and Internet is library. The first child labour library, NGO library and occupational health and safety libraries in our country are opened here.

The Working Environment periodical that is made out by our foundation is published every two months since more than 13 years continuously. It is the periodical of longest-term of occupational health and safety in Turkiye. It addresses various subjects and is prepared by a multi-disciplinary team.

One of our favourable campaigns is the brain-drain. We do not regard it as a loss but a new strengthening and try to improve its contribution to our community. We need the help of those who work or have relatives at foreign countries very much.

Our foundation organized a painting, prose and poem contest for the primary school students concerning the labour children in 1998. The studies that are found to be successful may be seen at our web page.

Our foundation organizes a photography contest with a theme of working children since 2002. Distribution of the awards and the works of many photographers that were awarded or selected for exhibition may be seen at our web page.

The deprivations in accessing health, education and salary push people out of the society. We form a model to activate the young girls and their mothers so that they can overcome the problems of community. At this study that is named as “House for Young Girls”, women are aimed to be permanent at the working life as qualified labour elements.
